Conquering Fears
Parents were struggling to make ends meet; relatives were denying the girls their right to go to schools, even when the girl finally went to school, water-logged toilet facilities and lack of clean drinking water in schools welcomed her for most days, as if the crammed little common toilet back home, which was shared among four families, was not enough! Such was the state of conditions from which ‘fearless’ Gauri Jha emerged, victorious.
Victorious, because, she fought against her poor conditions to make her future bright; victorious because, she believed in the power of strength. “I am like my father, fearless”, says Gauri. Gauri’s father has been a constant and chief source of motivation for her and her three siblings. To better educate his kids, he re-located from a village in U.P to Gurgaon in Haryana and worked there as an electrician. Against the desires of his family, he got her daughter admitted to a school. Even when despite all efforts, he could not afford to pay the school fees, he always tried to fulfil his children’s every desire. On the other hand, reflecting her father’s undying spirit, Gauri too continued to attend school and study hard instead of being discouraged by dismal sanitation facilities in school.
Her struggles, prayers and faith in her convictions finally paid off when Yuva transformed her school. Today she happily boasts of the clean and beautiful environment at her school. Not only the toilets have been upgraded, but she and other kids have better access to clean water and an opportunity to study with other better infrastructure facilities. This encouraged other children to regularly attend school. Gauri cheers that “now, every girl has the freedom to use toilets in the school, which we all initially lacked”. Statement of Motivation – “Recently, I learnt from Mr. Amitabh Shah that when you truly want something that you need, and you pray for it from the bottom of your heart, not just for yourself but for all, you are sure to get it.”
